Annals of Manipulation

Quiz questions:

  1. How many Congress members have been charge-sheeted or arrested in the 2G Spectrum scam?
  2. How many Congress members have been charge-sheeted or arrested in the Commonwealth Games scam?
  3. How many Congress members have been charge-sheeted or arrested in the Adarsh Building Society scam?
  4. How many Congress members have been charge-sheeted or arrested in the Bellary illegal mining scam?
  5. How many Congress members have been charge-sheeted or arrested in money-for-votes scam?

The answer for all these questions is same: zero. In CWG, NCP bore the brunt. In 2G, we all know it was DMK, who lost power in their state, had their leader’s daughter spending more than six months in prison and have one of their leaders still lodged there. In Adarsh we lost all the files so nobody could be prosecuted. In Money for votes fraud, it was Amar Singh of Samajwadi Party who went to jail and, of course, some BJP MPs too were arrested!

If you look around, Jagan Mohan is getting deeper in trouble in AP for his disproportionate assets (from 11 lakhs to 365 crores in 5 years). However, despite several articles and questions springing up in dissident literature and on the Web, the secrecy about Robert Vadra’s business, his assets and the mysterious deaths in his family are still anathema to the mainstream press. Mr Kapil Sibal can brazenly implicate Raja in the 2G fiasco but will hit the roof if even at a mention of Chidambaram’s name. Now a few questions come up: What would have happened to Jagan Mohan Reddy if he had not rebelled against Congress? Would these investigations have started? What would have happened if Justice Ganguly not bothered about 2G and Subramaniam Swami stayed in the US to focus on his career in Harvard? Would Raja have been in jail and would they have cancelled these licenses? Had the foreign press not been involved in the CWG exposé, would Kalmadi have gone to Tihar?

None of these things had happened in UPA 1. Subramaniam Swami was busy in Harvard. Jagan Mohan, with his father, was happily in Congress. Sharad Pawar was in love with Sonia. And Anna Hazare hadn’t stepped out of Ralegaon Siddhi. Therefore, Raja was still in the ministry, Kalmadi was still heading the Olympic committee and Jagan was a good boy.

Were Manmohan and Sonia not aware that Raja was engineering one of the biggest swindles within their coterie? Was Sonia not aware that Jagan Mohan Reddy was selling Hyderabad real estate wholesale under their ‘watchful’ eye when YSR was in power? Was Manmohan Singh not aware that Kalmadi was converting the CWG into his personal ATM? Was Chidambaram not aware?  And whom are they fooling by saying now that Raja acted unilaterally? It is either connivance or negligence. Which one is it? From the fact that Manmohan did not act for more than a year on Swami’s letter requesting permission to prosecute Raja, and he did only upon Supreme Court’s intervention forces us to make our own conclusion. This, we are afraid, isn’t untrue.

So, what does it say about the present government, who are still shamelessly defending their colleagues and trying to blame the opposition for their problems? What does it say about the ‘cleanest’ Prime Minister? And, above all, what about the Supreme Leader, the Saint of Sacrifice?  The tentacles of 2G are struggling desperately to reach even Chidambaram, and as we write this, have failed, albeit temporarily. Will it ever manage to reach the upper echelons and try to touch the Madam?
